Chapel Named As Middlesbrough Pub Of The Year

Chapel - a family-owned real ale pub has been awarded Pub of the Year by Camra Cleveland Branch.

Chapel Whitehouse Street

The award presentation will take place on Saturday 4th April 2026 as part of a Bank Holiday beer festival at the pub to mark the occasion.

Chapel has been operating as a real ale and craft beer pub for nearly five years, opening in the immediate aftermath of the Covid Pandemic.  The bar has developed a very strong reputation for serving some of the best beers in the Teesside area.  The pub has also made it into the Good Beer Guide every single year since opening.

The pub has been opened in a modest Chapel which was one of many serving as a primitive methodist church in the industrial landscape of Victorian Middlesbrough, the Chapel itself dates to 1890 and predates the large St Cuthbert’s Church (Newport roundabout) located next door.

The renovation of the building aimed to preserve the historic character, including the 1950s stained glass window and is now distinctly recognisable to many happy pub goers.  Serving a selection of new and fresh cask beers every week and a “hymn-board” of craft beers plus many other beverages such as boxed cider and a selection of spirits, the pub has been drawing discerning drinkers from far and wide.

The family-run business is supported by a small team of staff members most of whom also work in various guises in Middlesbrough’s creative sector.   The pub has not only achieved recognition as a fine boozer but also have built up a reputation as a local cultural hub.  The events side of the business has been an important aspect in the brew, as pubs face many challenges in the current economic climate.

The old Community Hall on site behind the Chapel itself is run as part of the business has been host to everything from, comedy, music, poetry, film, crafts, board-gaming and more and it is home to many community groups and interest groups who use the space to gather, create and enjoy a great pint!

In celebration of the award Chapel will be hosting as Celebration Beer Festival on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend as part of which customers will be able to enjoy watching the Boro match live on Sky Sports on both the Friday and Monday in the Hall.  There will be food from the onsite 5* catering business The Hungry Monk and live music from local musician Reece Vidamour on the Saturday evening and live jazz from the Ian Bosworth Quintet on Sunday afternoon.

The whole event is free admission and if you haven’t tried the finest beer in Boro yet, Chapel invites you to come and try it!
