The public house is proudly the home of many real ale products and won Cleveland Camra Pub of the Year (South) in 2024 and 2026. The pub has recently been informed that it has also come in as runner up in the 2026 Yorkshire Region Pub of the Year competition, beating nearly 4 ½ thousand pubs and approximately 400 pubs listed in the Good Beer Guide by Camra in the Yorkshire region. The will be presented with the runner award on 7th November 2026 at Chapel. The owners of the pub are very proud to have come so high up the listings.

The hospitality sector is in challenging times and independent businesses are so often struggling but we have a good team and loyal customers and very excellent partners on the event side of things. It's our 5th birthday and we are half way to ten years and we are ready to keep going!”.
This weekend (30th August) Chapel is hosting the annual pAlegrimmage event which is run and organised by The Golden Smog (Stockton). The event raised over £25,000 for The Great North Air Ambulance last year.
Russell Towers said “The event got so big in the last couple of years they felt that they need to move to a bigger space for the final drinking day. We are delighted to work in partnership with them. It is still very much their event and this week we are keenly watching the socials as many pAlegrims make their way to the Smog with their barrels of beer”.
Every year pubs and breweries sponsor the event and barrels are donated are walked, cycled or even move by boat to “Smog Alley”. Many pAlegrims are moving barrels to The Golden Smog in advance of the event and these will make the final journey to Chapel by van. Some pAlegrims will be coming directly to Chapel on Sunday. A large contingent will be coming from the The Golden Smog on Sunday along the river bringing barrels with them.
All of this is ahead of Chapel's birthday weekend which will be celebrated as their annual beer festival on 4th, 5th and 6th September.
The event will feature are large choice of cask beers plus keg, ciders and the other usual beverages. Hots snack will be served daytime to early evening and on Saturday night we welcome Dan Walker who will be playing a most excellent set of live music for people joining the event. Entry to all events are free and customers old and new are invited to come along and support.
